This workshop will introduce one of the most exciting and fun styles of embroidery – stumpwork. Kate will take you through each step needed to create a simple leaf design, manipulating the wire, creating a neat and secure buttonhole stitch edge, embellishing and decorating your shape, careful cutting out and how to attach your slip to your textile work.

Bookers will receive full joining instructions and a session materials list. Plus, there will also be details of patterns, advance preparation guides and links of where kits can be purchased if these are applicable to your session.  

You will need:

3D Embroidered Stumpwork
  • 1 x 10″ square piece of cotton fabric
  • 1 x 3m lengths stranded cotton embroidery floss
  • 2 lengths Hamilworth paper covered wire
  • Needle
  • A seat frame, barrel clamp or some other clamp for holding your embroidery hoop so you can work with both hands
  • A 4 – 6 inch hoop
  • Sharp embroidery scissors and household scissors
  • 1 x 10″ square piece of cotton fabric
  • 1 x 3m lengths stranded cotton embroidery floss

  • Needle

Alternatively, a kit is available from the tutor, priced from £22 and includes 2 pieces of beautiful hand-dyed cotton fabric and matching variegated thread, paper covered wire, needle and fully illustrated instructions.

Access to the session

The session will take place live at the date and time stated above. All bookers will also receive a recording of the session to watch again on demand until 11:59pm on 31 December 2020. If you are unable to access the live session, we recommend you book in advance to take part at a time and date that suits you. There will be the option to book on demand, but please note a small price increase will apply.

About the Tutor: Kate Tume

Kate Tume is a textile artist from West Sussex. Her work explores themes around species loss and the decline in our natural world, and seeks to subvert popular narratives around what extinction looks like. Kate’s work has featured in publications and exhibitions internationally. She teaches textile art techniques to students from around the world via her workshops, one-to-one tuition and online classes. She also designs and produces a range of Textile Art Boxes, which provide the opportunity to master hand embellishment and embroidery techniques in a sustainable, zero-waste kit.
