Wendy will shows you how to ‘draw’ with your thread, using a basic domestic sewing machine. On a sample piece, practising different stitches for foliage and flowers and then create a small flower meadow picture which can be mounted in a frame or as a greetings card. Basic materials and equipment are required for this exciting technique, but no experience is necessary. Why not have a go; it really is easier than you may think if you follow the simple guidelines. 

Materials you will need:

Free motion embroidery

You will need:

  • A basic domestic sewing machine, with an extension table if you have one
  • A darning foot / freehand embroidery foot for your machine
  • Embroidery hoop – 7 or 8 inch
  • Small embroidery scissors
  • Calico or firm cotton fabric. x 2 pieces 10” x 10”. One piece could be coloured fabric, or painted as your meadow background
  • Machine thread. This can be polyester (Drima, Guterman etc.) or rayon machine embroidery thread (Madeira, Guterman, Aurifil etc.) I would suggest medium and dark green, beige, ochre for seed heads or grasses, red or colour of choice for flowers
  • Small pieces of chiffon or organza to suggest flowers in the background. (optional)
  • Wooden kebab or cocktail stick
