Learn to Handle Stretch Fabric, Make Leggings

About

Machine sew a pair of three-quarter length leggings and in the process learn how to handle two-way stretch knit fabric. With guidance, you will select the appropriate size for your figure and cut out the two fabric pieces required before the start of the session. During the class you will learn how to fit, adjust, then construct these simple leggings, finishing with an elastic waist and top stitched hems. Suitable for intermediate level (those with some knowledge of dressmaking).

You will need:

  • 1 m of 150cm wide (60”) stretch fabric (two-way stretch knit with Lycra)
  • 1m waist elastic (2cm wide)
  • 1 reel Gütermann sew-all thread in a matching shade
  • Kwik Sew Pattern 3661 for three-quarter length leggings (from www.sewdirect.com)
  • Schmetz stretch needle size 12/80
  • 50cm Tear away stabiliser
  • Sewing machine with a range of stretch stitches

About the Tutor: Lorna Knight

Lorna Knight started sewing at an early age, with encouragement and guidance from her Mum, and she still can’t quite believe she is lucky enough to call it her career. In her studio, in the Staffordshire Moorlands, she teaches specialist workshops in couture dressmaking, lingerie and overlocking alongside selling haberdashery, gadgets and machines. 

Lorna has taught at the V&A; filmed a Craftsy class ‘The Iconic Tweed Jacket’ and written numerous sewing articles and reference books including ‘Dressmaking Technique Bible’.
