Contemporary Quilt is a specialist group of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles with over 800 members. A diverse group of quilters and fabric artists, working at the cutting edge of quilt making, creating innovative and dynamic art.
Each year a challenge is issued to all members and the theme chosen for 2016 was ‘On the Edge’, with a set format. This could be interpreted in any way and using any technique, with the condition that it should conform to the accepted format of a quilt, that is layers of fabric held together with stitch. The interpretations range from the physical to the spiritual, and from issues close to home to global ones.
Techniques used include dyeing, printing, stencilling, painting, stitch, and a wealth of surface embellishment. Fabrics used range from silk and cotton to wool and synthetics, some new and some recycled. The pieces selected for this exhibition were juried to form a cohesive and varied collection. They demonstrate the wide variety of techniques and styles present in contemporary quilt making today.
