Cas Holmes: The Shipping Forecast

This work by Cas Holmes explores the concept of ‘place’ and our understanding of the impact this has upon our identities and the space we call ‘home’. With migration, changes in our working lives and opportunities to travel, our certainty about who we are and where we fit in is often unsure.

The connection we have to landscape, memory and place is at the heart of Cas Holmes’ work. Ephemeral in nature, everything used in the construction of the works has been found during her travels, or has been gifted. Her thinking is constantly changing and being challenged by this connection of people and place as part of her working process.

The pandemic, health issues, continuing conflicts and social/economic difficulties has brought many changes to the world in which we now navigate. Personal circumstances have seen Cas lose the freedom to travel and work as she once did, leading her to question the concept of ‘place’ and our understanding of change as it impacts our identities and the space we call home.

“Each stitch in the cloth connects my inner thoughts with the outer world and provides a sense of reparation and consolation; it equally speaks about my need to continue my practice and to connect in terms of my well-being.”
