Art Textiles: Made in Britain: Illuminate

Art Textiles: Made in Britain presented their latest group show of work made to the theme of Illuminate – ‘to make something visible or bright, shining light on it or helping to clarify or explain’ resulting in an exciting display by a variety of artists exploring different ideas and media.

Each artist shone a light on a different aspect of life and explored ‘Illuminate’ in their own chosen way using many different textile techniques, including felting, quilting, embroidery, mixed media, recycled materials and more. We saw gold, glitter, neon, reflective fabrics and materials in ‘Illuminate’, Art Textiles:Made in Britain’s new exhibition.

Art Textiles: Made in Britain was formed ten years ago to showcase the diversity of British Art Textiles, such as art quilts, mixed media, contemporary embroidery and felt making.

Members include Bethan Ash, Louise Baldwin, Jessica Grady, Cas Holmes, Rosie James, Edwina Mackinnon, Sandra Meech, Sylvia Paul, Stephanie Redfern, Christine Restall and Sarah Waters. And we are pleased to announce that our guest artist this year is Christine Howell.

The ‘illuminated manuscript’ told us modern stories focusing on the challenges we face – climate change, or aspects of social media. Other ideas explored the glowing colours, the touches of gold, the draughtsmanship, detail and pattern in illuminated manuscripts as a source of inspiration in both a direct and more oblique way.
